Digital Legacy. What the heck is a Digital Legacy? I wouldn’t be surprised if you never heard that phrase! But that doesn’t diminish the importance of it. is a phrase that nobody uttered 5 years ago, but it is becoming a more mainstream idea today. But what the heck is it? As discussed in our last post, the sheer volume of data that we generate in our connected lives is staggering to say the least. So think about it like this: Your digital legacy is all of those pictures, videos, posts, tweets, accounts, etc. that will persist and have to be dealt with later or when you are gone. It grows every time you snap a picture and share it on social media, eSign a document, or digitize a critical document from ye ol’ filing cabinet. Different than your Digital Estate (which we will cover on Thursday), Digital Legacy is the public footprint that we want to leave behind – whether with family, or everyone.

As we think about in this context, it immediately becomes clear that we probably aren’t just dealing with a couple of social accounts and a picture or two. In fact, the very thought of putting memories or documents into that category can be complex and daunting. Breathe easy. It doesn’t HAVE to be complex or daunting – but it DOES have to be personal. There will be decisions that have to be made about what represents YOU, and what is the best way to preserve and share that with those closest to us. So what am I driving at? It’s simple. You don’t have to go into it blindly. Here are a few tips:

1) Define your Goals: Define and record the ultimate goal for your Digital Legacy. This should include the who, what, where, when, why and how of the entire process. Putting it on paper will help by adding some clarity and scope to how you should proceed. This is the WHY.

2) Take an Inventory: Think about where you might have that you want to preserve. This could be social accounts, casual resources, a filing cabinet, or a photo album. When you know where it all is, you just have to refer to your stated goal to determine what to preserve. This is the What and the Where.

3) Organize and Preserve: Now you know the Why, the What, and the Where – so on to the How! The most critical part of the How boils down to one word: Preservation. You have to choose a utility that can withstand the test of time and technology change, while still maintaining the flexibility to share with loved ones and pass on to the next generations. That all but eliminates most mainstream solutions.

As mentioned above, this does not have to be a daunting process, nor do you have to go it alone. In fact, there are many services out there that can help you with pieces-parts of the above. If you want it all under one roof, we would be happy to assist – with all, part, or some of your project. Just send us a note and we will pair you up with a Concierge Consultant to help you at whatever level you are comfortable. Mention this Blog post in your note and the first hour is on us!
